Victoria Police have launched an investigation after a neighborhood footy participant was coward-punched in unsavoury scenes over the weekend.

A Hampton Park participant was struck from behind by a hooded man who had jumped the fence earlier than coming into the interchange space to unleash his assault.

The ugly incident occurred throughout a reserve-grade sport between Hampton Park and Doveton at Robert Sales space Reserve on Saturday.
